Situated in an enormous rock, which is most probably “torn” from the nearby mountains in a strong earthquake just as the Prespa Lake, the island Golem Grad is the one and only island in Macedonia. As a rare natural phenomenon, the island is abundant with thick forest vegetation, and the juniper which is mostly present as a plant is actually endemic and one can only come across it on the Snake Island. The island in populated with snakes, whereas there are no carnivores, and the Prespa Lake during the summer time is the home of thousands of cormorans.
Since 14th July, 2008, Golem Grad is opened for visitors, and our recommendation would be to go on that trip via an experienced tour guide.
